George Armstrong Custer, who commanded the
7 th
Cavalry Regiment
during the 1876 campaign against the Sioux and Cheyennes of the north.
He survived the Battle of Little Bighorn.
(He did not fight in the battle, but watched from a distance, and was the first to report the defeat of the 7th Cavalry Regiment.)
