Cardinals pitcher Mort Cooper won the National League MVP this year, the first of three consecutive different Cardinals to win the award, with Stan Musial and Marty Marion to follow. The Yankees were in the second year of a similar streak, with Joe Gordon winning the American League MVP, a year after teammate Joe DiMaggio and before Spud Chandler
