    Description

Two original albumen prints from 1890 and 1891, taken by photographer Clarence Moreledge of Northwestern Photo Co. of Chadron, Nebraska, whose company is well known for documenting the aftermath of the Wounded Knee massacre. The first photograph, published in ''Eyewitness at Wounded Knee'' shows the Sioux collecting provisions on ration day; the 20 percent cut in rations in 1890 is cited as contributing to the renewed popularity of the Sioux's Ghost Dance, a religious ritual that the federal forces found so threatening. The second photo is titled in the negative, ''A Sioux Camp July, 4th 1891, at PR [Pine Ridge] Agency S.D.'' Photos measure 7'' x 4.25'', affixed to an album mat measuring 10'' x 7''. Some buckling and staining to mat. Photos themselves are in very good condition.
